The Benefits Roundtable Adds Two New Wellness Tools to Its Suite of Services for HR Benefits Executives

Web-Based Tools to Assess and Measure the Return on Wellness Investments

The Benefits Roundtable, a membership program of the Corporate Executive Board (NASDAQ: EXBD) and a leading provider of best practices, executive education, and decision-support services serving benefits executives and their staff, today announced two new additions to its existing suite of wellness-related resources at Human Resource Executive’s Tenth Anniversary HR Technology® Conference & Exposition. The conference is being held in Chicago, IL on October 10-12, 2007. The two new tools include the Wellness Returns Calculator and the Wellness Impact Assessment.

Benefits Roundtable Managing Director Michal Kisilevitz commented, “Benefits executives have been struggling to find ways to measure the effectiveness of their wellness investments and to make sure they are getting high returns from these efforts. What we believe is exciting about our work is that it not only uncovered the key metric organizations need to focus on to maximize wellness returns - employee commitment to healthy behaviors – but also identifies the specific actions they must take to capture significantly greater health care cost savings and productivity improvements.” The Roundtable’s new tools leverage a robust survey of wellness impact on employee health behavior change and an actuarial model linking improvements in health behaviors to health care cost savings and reduced absenteeism. In combination, they allow an organization to both determine potential returns from wellness and to measure the actual returns achieved as a result of implementing wellness programs.

About The Wellness Returns Calculator

The Wellness Returns Calculator is an online tool that helps organizations to project returns from particular wellness investments. The Calculator incorporates a few simple pieces of information into the Roundtable’s proprietary model for estimating the impact of employee health behavior change. The tool helps organizations choose the right size and mix of wellness investments by providing estimates of both direct health care cost savings and productivity improvements resulting from smoking cessation, diet, and exercise program investments.

The Calculator helps organizations answer three questions about potential wellness investments:

    * What is the direct health care cost savings potential of wellness for my organization?
    * What is the value of productivity improvement my organization could obtain through improved employee health?
    * What is the total return my organization could realize?

About The Wellness Impact Assessment

The Wellness Impact Assessment enables organizations to determine the impact of current wellness resources and programs by measuring changes in employee health behaviors and commitment to a healthy lifestyle over the course of specific wellness interventions. The assessment provides:

    * An assessment of behavioral change driven by an organization’s wellness initiatives
    * An estimate of the resulting ROI
    * Benchmarks from peer organizations
    * Recommendations for improving wellness program design.

Benefits Roundtable Wellness Initiatives

These tools join a suite of Benefits Roundtable resources that support the design, roll-out, and ongoing management of organizations’ wellness initiatives. These include, among others, a Wellness Implementation Cookbook, which provides a comprehensive set of resources for implementing wellness, and a Health Risk Assessment service, which includes survey administration and analysis and advice in driving employee participation and targeting wellness initiatives.

About the Benefits Roundtable

The Benefits Roundtable is a membership program of the Corporate Executive Board (NASDAQ: EXBD), a leading provider of insight and analysis on the most critical business challenges facing benefits executives and execution-support resources that enable organizations to apply the analysis in solving those challenges.

About the Corporate Executive Board (CEB)

The Corporate Executive Board Company is a leading provider of best practices research and analysis focusing on corporate strategy, operations and general management issues. The Corporate Executive Board provides an integrated set of services currently to more than 3,700 of the world’s largest and most prestigious corporations, including more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500. These services are provided primarily on an annual subscription basis and include best practices research studies, executive education seminars, customized research briefs, and Web-based access to a library of more than 300,000 corporate best practices.

Garrett Creek Ranch Conference Center Announces Major Environmental Sustainability Initiative

Teaming with Texas Christian University (TCU) and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT)

Garrett Creek Ranch Conference Center has announced today its intention of launching an environmental sustainability initiative that will address the need to preserve the earth for future generations as well as implement solutions for dealing with limited natural resources.

“Our goal is to effectively adapt to limited water and energy availability while becoming a model for conference center guests, who can replicate green initiatives when they return to their families and their organizations,” said Jaynie Schultz, Owner, Garrett Creek Ranch Conference Center.

To help with this initiative, Garrett Creek Ranch has partnered with TCU, formerly Texas Christian University, through its Institute for Environmental Studies, and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT).

“We are on a collision course with reality,” said Tony Burgess, Prof. of Professional Practice at TCU and nationally-known naturalist. “For example, the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is growing beyond a sustainable water supply. I am involved with The Ranch to help it become an active role model for North Texas and the nation.”

Pat Harrison, Assistant Director and Head of Education at BRIT, hopes that her involvement will help make daily practices at The Ranch more sustainable. “This initiative is a way that Garrett Creek Ranch can show other companies how we can better conserve our natural resources.”

Garrett Creek Ranch has already implemented small changes that include using environmentally-friendly CFL bulbs, re-landscaping to use native drought-resistant plant material and composting the many pounds of waste generated from the kitchen.

“We hope that this initiative will help The Ranch and others get closer to the land,” said Jaynie Schultz. “All of us need to do this for ourselves and our children.”

About Garrett Creek Ranch Conference Center

Founded in Paradise, Texas twenty years ago by Leslie Schultz, Garrett Creek Ranch is among the country’s leading conference centers for small meetings of up to one hundred guests. Now owned by Leslie’s daughter, Jaynie, the Ranch serves corporations and non-profit organizations that want a relaxed, flexible environment built to address issues involving team building, leadership development, strategic planning, and training. Garrett Creek Ranch has a return rate of 85 percent and is located less than one hour from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

TechSmith Introduces Camtasia Studio 5: Allowing Any Professional to Create and Share Polished Screencasts, Demonstrations and Presentations

Sales and Marketing Professionals, Trainers and Helpdesk Staff Can Easily Create Screencasts for “Anytime Anywhere” Viewing by Colleagues and Customers

TechSmith Corp., the world's leading provider of screen capture and recording solutions, today announced the availability of Camtasia Studio 5, which dramatically simplifies the creation and distribution of screencasts. Now business professionals with no programming or multimedia expertise can create engaging demonstrations, rich marketing content, PowerPoint-based video presentations and interactive training in minutes.

A one-minute overview screencast of Camtasia Studio 5 can be viewed here: http://www.techsmith.com/cs5overview

“From the concept stage to final animation, Camtasia Studio 5 gives me everything I need to bring my digital drawings to life,” said Jason Ryan, supervising animator at DreamWorks Animation. “Compared to earlier versions, this new release has really been simplified so I can just focus on my presentation and not worry about the technical side. Camtasia gives me everything I need to record, edit and produce professional screencasts.”

“Every organization I’ve met has expertise and information they need to share,” said Troy Stein, Camtasia Studio product manager at TechSmith. “With Camtasia Studio 5, anyone can record what they know and share it in video format. Camtasia Studio users, whether they’re in sales, marketing, training or support, get to shine like rock stars within their organizations because what they create helps make everyone more productive and helps to improve the bottom line.”

Camtasia Studio automatically records exactly what a user sees on a computer screen, what they say, and how they interact with any Windows-based application or website. Individuals can then edit the interactive content and share it online in all popular streaming media formats including Flash (SWF, FLV), fixed media such as CD or DVD, or portable media players such as the Apple iPod.

In addition to the many user-experience and stability enhancements, and added transitions, some of the new features in Camtasia Studio 5 include:

    * Camtasia SmartFocus™ -- enables users to create smooth automatic zoom-n-pan action with a single mouse click to focus the viewer’s attention on important points of interest and to provide visual clarity when delivering screencasts inside small playback windows like blogs, on YouTube, or via the Apple iPod. See the Camtasia SmartFocus screencast at: http://www.techsmith.com/cs5smartfocus.
    * TechSmith ExpressShow™ -- is a sleek staging and playback format for Camtasia Studio screencasts that gives the viewer user-friendly controls and puts maximum emphasis on the content while taking up minimal screen real estate. Customers can also apply their own corporate branding.
    * Snap-to-App -- automatically places applications, dialogue boxes and the cursor in the right recording position at the right time so action is smooth, editing time is reduced, and the presentation is clear and professional. See the Snap-to-App screencast for the new recorder at: http://www.techsmith.com/cs5recorder.
    * New Screencast.com, blog, and FTP preset outputs that allow users to easily share content quickly online.

Camtasia Studio 5 is integrated with the new Screencast.com service, which is currently in open beta testing. The integration between Camtasia Studio 5 and Screencast.com facilitates fast and easy video sharing. Unlike other online video hosting services, Screencast.com retains the original quality, size, and professionalism of the uploaded screencast.

System Requirements and Availability

Camtasia Studio 5 supports Microsoft Windows XP and Vista with DirectX 9.0 or later. Additional digital video formats can be imported, including AVI, MPEG, MPG, and WMV. Web cameras and microphones for capturing audio and video are available for purchase separately. Camtasia Studio 5 has a suggested retail price of $299 with a 30-day free trial. A free, 60-day account for Screencast.com is also available. The software and optional hardware can be purchased at http://www.techsmith.com.

iSchool Researchers at Syracuse University Create Technology to Improve Access to Digital Resources

Reading about Egyptian mummies or papyrus wanes in comparison to seeing a sarcophagus or the ancient paper. Or simply knowing the local newspaper was first printed in 1892 is less impressive than viewing that original issue with its ink smears, old fonts, and outdated language. But fieldtrips aren’t always possible.

Researchers at the Center for Natural Language Processing (CNLP) at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University are working to make more of these collections available online or through digital libraries. The Institute of Library and Museum Services Building Digital Collections program provided $191,000 in support to CNLP and a team from Digital Learning Sciences (DLS) at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.

The research team will integrate three digital library tools and services to create a new hybrid, computer-assisted cataloging system, the Metadata Assignment and Search Tool (MAST). MAST will enable libraries and museums to describe and disseminate their digital materials—whether they are photos, drawings, historical records, or school lesson plans—efficiently.

Another part of this project will be to link these newly catalogued materials to state-level educational standards, which in turn will increase access to these digital resources for teachers and their students.

“When a teacher asks ‘What do you have on ancient Egypt for my fifth-grade class,’ for example, we’re hoping the librarian can use this tool to share a richer set of resources,” says Anne Diekema, CNLP interim director and research professor at the iSchool at Syracuse.

The new system is three-fold. The first step involves extracting and assigning core metadata to digital material—much like the information collected in the traditional library’s card cataloging system. This system uses natural language processing to have computers automatically scan and assign these key words.

The second step uses a process called CAT, computer-assisted educational standards metadata assignment tool. During this phase, a computer processes the metadata and finds and suggests corresponding educational standards, which are later verified by a human reviewer.

The third step pulls this information into a searchable Digital Collection System, through which library or museum managers can update or customize the materials’ descriptive information.

“Including educational standards provides an important service, underpinning educational practice, curriculum design, professional development, and high-stakes testing and assessment,” says Holly Devaul, DLS manager of educational programs and services. “Digital library users have requested this information to support teaching and learning as well as accountability requirements.”

Biolog and HSC-Rangel College of Pharmacy Receive $1 Million NIH Phase II STTR Grant to Develop Phenotype MicroArray™ Capabilities for Bacterial Pathogens

Biolog, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a two-year Phase II STTR Grant for $1 million from the National Institutes of Health National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) for the expansion of its Phenotype MicroArray™ (PM) technology to allow detailed phenotypic testing of important fastidious bacterial pathogens. The project will be done in collaboration with Professor Lacy Daniels, Ph.D., from the Texas A&M Health Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy.

This award follows a previous Phase I grant in which Biolog successfully developed technology to address the important human pathogens Campylobacter and Helicobacter.

PM technology is a powerful assay platform that allows phenotyping to be performed in a simple, rapid, cost-effective and comprehensive manner. Phenotypes are the biological properties of a cell that result from its genetic and epigenetic blueprints. Tools for sequencing and manipulating cellular genetics are well advanced. More and better tools are needed to understand how genetic changes alter cellular phenotypes, and PM technology is designed to fill that need.

The principal goal of this STTR project is to adapt PM technology for important bacterial groups that require special conditions for culture and testing. Biolog will focus on agents of lung, cutaneous and tissue infections (Legionella, Nocardia, Mycobacterium), important colonizers of the colon and vagina (Bacteroides, Clostridium, Lactobacillus, Escherichia) and also will perform additional work on microaerophilic gastrointestinal pathogens (Helicobacter, Campylobacter, Arcobacter, Wolinella).

Biolog has opted to work with Dr. Daniels at the HSC-Rangel College of Pharmacy because of his expertise in metabolism and physiology of Mycobacterium. Dr. Daniels and his collaborators will focus their work on this very important bacterial genus.

The World Health Organization has estimated that about one-third of the world’s population is infected with M. tuberculosis, and it is responsible for about 12 percent of all deaths due to infectious disease. Other Mycobacterium species are also important pathogens, including the M. avium group (AIDS, Johne’s disease, and possibly Crohn’s disease), and M. leprae (leprosy).

At the HSC-COP, Dr. Daniels has access to special facilities to safely perform work on Mycobacterium, either on-site (for the less pathogenic species) or in collaboration with nearby special facilities (for the very pathogenic M. tuberculosis).

“We are grateful to NIH for continuing to fund PM technology” says Barry Bochner, Ph.D., Biolog’s Chairman and CEO. “NIGMS funded the original development of the technology for important model microorganisms – a bacterium (Escherichia coli), and a yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). With the seed funding, Biolog was able to develop two sets of nearly 2,000 phenotypic assays that could be used to analyze the phenotypes of these microorganisms in great detail. Then Biolog received funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to develop new protocols that greatly extended these capabilities to over 1,000 species of bacteria, including most important pathogens of humans, other animals and plants.”

Scientists working on diverse topics of microbial research and development have been utilizing the unique information that PM technology provides. More than 80 scientific publications and presentations listed on Biolog’s website document the effectiveness and productivity of PM technology. These studies fall into 3 broad areas. Some scientists use the technology to test cells with mutations and see how genetic changes alter the biological properties of the cell. Other scientists test and compare large natural collections of bacteria to try to understand why some strains are more pathogenic, more persistent or more widespread. Still others use the technology to create nearly 2,000 culture conditions and see how a bacterium changes in different environments, for example, to gain a better understanding of biofilm formation in different environments.

PM technology is by far the most powerful and versatile cell phenotyping tool available, and it has been successfully commercialized by Biolog. The company currently offers more than 30 different PM test panels that can be used with bacterial, fungal and, most recently, with human cells.

Labs doing small projects can start using PM technology without having to purchase any equipment. For labs using PM technology in high-throughput or with kinetic phenotype applications, Biolog offers its OmniLog® instrument which can simultaneously incubate and read 50 microplates. Biolog also has a commercial laboratory that runs PM assays on a fee for service basis.

University of Wisconsin, One of Most Successful U.S. Heart Transplant Programs, Begins Certification Training on CardioWest Artificial Heart

Transplant Leader Will Be 26th Hospital to Provide Temporary Artificial Heart That Has Highest Bridge to Transplant Rate

On Sept. 10 and 11, the University of Wisconsin (UW) heart transplant team, including Niloo M. Edwards, M.D., chairman of cardiothoracic surgery and director of cardiac transplantation, and Takushi Kohmoto, M.D., director of the mechanical assist device program, received the first of four phases of certification training on the CardioWest™ temporary Total Artificial Heart (TAH-t) at University Medical Center in Tucson.

The heart transplant program at UW is one of the more active in the United States, with more than 560 heart transplants performed during its history. According to statistics from the United Network for Organ Sharing, heart transplant survival rates at UW are some of the highest in the country. While the national patient survival rate for three years post-transplant is 79.7 percent, the three-year survival rate at UW is 86.67 percent.

Today there are 22 CardioWest artificial heart certified centers, 11 in the U.S. and 11 in Europe. UW is the 26th hospital in the world to receive the first phase of certification training.

The CardioWest artificial heart is the only FDA and CE approved temporary artificial heart in the world. Originally designed as a permanent replacement heart, the CardioWest artificial heart is currently approved as a bridge to transplant for patients dying from end stage biventricular failure. Their survival depends on receiving a donor heart, or an artificial heart as a bridge to human heart transplant.

The pivotal clinical study of the CardioWest artificial heart published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM 2004; 351: 859-867) showed that 79 percent of patients receiving the artificial heart survived to transplant, the highest survival rate for any heart device in the world.

University of Nebraska Deploys Ekinops 360 Platform for High-Capacity Optical Network

The University of Nebraska (UNL) has installed DWDM equipment from Ekinops, a leading provider of optical transport and DWDM solutions, that massively increases connectivity to its campus in Lincoln and is critical to the university’s participation in an international physics research project, Ekinops announced today.

The new optical network took part in a demonstration on Tuesday at the opening session of the Internet2 Member Meeting in San Diego. The demonstration showed how an 8 Gigabits per second stream from the UNL physics lab, transported by the Ekinops equipment to the Internet2 network, was dynamically switched across the Internet2 backbone.

To enhance its participation in the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) CMS project, the university has deployed the Ekinops 360 platform, using multiple DWDM channels, each running at 10 Gigabits per second. It increased the university’s available bandwidth more than 48 times compared with its previous connectivity speed.

The Ekinops 360 is a carrier-class optical transport platform designed for metro, regional, and long-haul networks. The platform can aggregate and transport any Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SONET, or SDH client protocol.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a 22,000-student campus that is part of the University of Nebraska system, is a Tier 2 site in the CMS project, one of the ongoing experiments at the CERN particle accelerator in Switzerland. The CMS project generates massive amounts of data, which is distributed to different computing centers across the world for processing.

To fully participate in the project, the university needed a network capable of carrying massive amounts of data to its supercomputers. Approximately 200 Terabytes (200 trillion bytes) of data are transported weekly.

Dale Finkelson, the university’s network engineer, was tasked with finding a solution with greater transport capacity to the university. “We evaluated different options but building our own optical network and utilizing DWDM promised the greatest increase to our capacity and was extremely affordable at the same time,” Finkelson explained.

The network span is 230 miles and links the university campus in Lincoln to the Internet2 in the Kansas City node. Benefiting from the Ekinops 360 long haul transponders, the requirement for amplification is minimal. The installed configuration occupies a small number of slots in the chassis and allows for adding a much greater capacity in the future.

Although the primary requirement was to transport 10G data from the university’s routers, the university is also using Ekinops aggregation technology for aggregating and transporting multiple Gigabit Ethernet inputs over a 10G wavelength.

The university’s IT staff has also found that despite the platform’s enormous capacity, the Ekinops 360 was easy to install and operate. “Once the power and fibers were ready, installation took half a day. People started using it 20 minutes after we plugged it in, and it has run solid ever since,” said Finkelson.

Since deploying the new optical network, the University of Nebraska has seen tremendous performance improvements and cost savings. “Having our own optical network gives us a lot of flexibility,” Finkelson said. “We can add capacity at a minimal cost and in a very short time. If we need another 10G wavelength for another large project, it would be as easy as plugging another card in the chassis.”

“Academic and research collaboration requires moving tremendous amounts of data and puts heavy demands on the transport network,” said Jonathan Amir, Ekinops’ vice president of sales. “A growing number of universities are relying on Ekinops for a simple, high-capacity and cost-effective DWDM transport solution and we are very proud of our work with the University of Nebraska and with other academic organizations.”

About Ekinops

Ekinops is a provider of innovative optical transport, WDM and aggregation solutions for service providers and enterprise networks. Its advanced TDM technology enables the wire-speed aggregation and transport of multiple high-speed data channels using standard 2.5G and 10G signals, significantly lowering the cost of building and maintaining scalable optical networks. Ekinops’ carrier-grade solutions leverage expertise in 10G transmission, aggregation, and Forward Error Correction to allow carriers to increase transport capacity over dark fiber, CWDM, DWDM, SONET/SDH and IP networks. The company is headquartered in Lannion, France, with sales offices in Europe and the US.
Princeton Review Ranks Acton School of Business’ Classroom Experience Among the ‘Best’ in the Country

The Princeton Review, one of the leading authorities on the best MBA programs in the country, has once again ranked the Acton School of Business’ MBA in Entrepreneurship (www.actonmba.org) as one of the “best” in multiple categories.

For the fourth year in a row, the esteemed guidebook ranked Acton’s professors among the top five MBA faculties in the country. Acton was also ranked as one of the top ten “Best Classroom Experiences” in America.

“This recognition is especially gratifying because the Princeton Review directly surveys student satisfaction and bases its findings on the opinions of actual students,” said Acton’s Executive Director, Georgia Spaeth. “At Acton, our students are our customers and we are committed to providing them the very best entrepreneurial education possible. These rankings and other feedback we collect weekly from our students tell us we are right on track.”

Princeton Review ranked Acton as one of the “Best Classroom Experiences” because of its heavy emphasis on class participation, which makes up more than 50% of each student’s grade, and its focus on using the case method in the classroom. Acton requires students to stand in the shoes of the entrepreneur and make tough decisions in over 300 real-life business case studies. Further amplifying the ‘classroom experience,’ Acton has innovative, hands-on training such as building real assembly lines and selling actual products door-to-door; projects that all students must complete in order to graduate.

Consistently ranked highly by the Princeton Review, Acton’s teachers are real-life entrepreneurs actively running businesses and all are “leaders in their fields with a real heart for teaching.” Acton is the only MBA program in the country where 100% of the professors are practicing entrepreneurs.

In today’s release of the 2008 rankings, The Princeton Review writes:

“The Acton program is built upon three pillars: learning to learn, learning how to make money, and learning how to live a life of meaning. Students say the program delivers on all three points and distinguishes itself by focusing on the personal side of career development. ‘Acton helps us learn about ourselves by aiding us in our search for our true calling in life — the one thing that we are the best at that intertwines with what the world needs,’ explains one student. ‘This help in our personal lives as well as our business lives is unparalleled by any other MBA program.’”

The Acton MBA in Entrepreneurship is offered through Hardin Simmons University.

Kids in Need Foundation Continues While SHOPA Goes Through Restructuring

The Board of Directors of the Kids In Need Foundation announces the continuation of its services to children most in need while the association that established it is restructuring itself. Founded 12 years ago by the School, Home, & Office Products Association (SHOPA), the Foundation provides free school supplies to 1.5 million children and 100,000 teachers annually.

While SHOPA goes through a process of determining future direction and activities, the Foundation will continue to conduct business as the Kids In Need Foundation.

“There is no question about whether or not the Kids In Need Foundation is continuing,” said Kathy Hirko, chair of the Kids In Need Board of Directors and owner of a long time SHOPA member company, KAZ Company. “The Foundation is funded exclusively by donations from corporations and individuals, and the mandate from our donors is that we continue to provide school supplies to kids who need them.”

The Kids In Need Foundation anticipates serving its 10 millionth student during the 2007-2008 academic year by providing free school supplies through a national network of 24 Resource Centers. Teachers come to the Centers to obtain supplies needed by children whose parents are unable to purchase them.

Already this year, the Foundation has distributed $29 million worth of product donated by or purchased with funds donated by corporations and individuals, a 20 percent increase over the total amount distributed in 2006.

In addition, the Foundation conducts the Kids In Need Teacher Grants program, awarding more than $100,000 each year to teachers. The Teacher Grants are offered through sponsoring retail chains and education credit unions that support the program through financial donations and back-to-school promotions. The intent of the grants is to offer educators the opportunity to teach original, innovative projects for which no other funding is available. All certified kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers in the U.S. are eligible to apply.

“With the support of our corporate partners and our dedicated staff and volunteers, the Kids In Need Foundation will be serving children and teachers for many years to come,” said Hirko. “We are enthusiastically looking forward to seizing new opportunities and forming additional partnerships with companies and individuals who care deeply about giving kids a better chance to succeed.”

The Kids In Need Foundation is a national non-profit organization providing school supplies to impoverished children and under-funded teachers. A 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 1995, the Foundation’s mission is to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need. The Kids in Need Foundation has distributed more than $300 million in school supplies since its founding and has awarded nearly $900,000 in grants to teachers.
