ProtonMediaTM and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business Aim to Revolutionize Enterprise Communication
Virtual Worlds are now even more useful for business due to a strategic partnership between ProtonMedia and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Virtual Worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated spaces that businesses use for communication, collaboration, training, and interactive marketing. The partnership between Duke and ProtonMedia will explore the next-generation collaboration and learning environments supporting Duke’s global strategy, which combine face-to-face and virtual interaction, including use of live video/telepresence technology with ProtoSphereTM, ProtonMedia’s business-friendly virtual world.
Nevin Fouts, Associate Dean for Information Technology at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business envisions a next-generation interaction space to support its global partner network. Globally dispersed students and partners will connect via immersive environments and will be able to interact through “telepresence portals” inside these spaces. Ron Burns, President of ProtonMedia, was impressed with the school’s vision and strategy and immediately saw the potential of tying ProtoSphere into the communication infrastructure at The Fuqua School of Business. In addition to application sharing and secure voice-over-IP, ProtoSphere offers access to social networking in the context of an immersive intranet environment.
The Protosphere environment will allow students, faculty and global partners to communicate securely using VoIP, collaborate using Web 2.0 tools, and access expertise within the global community.
Duke’s Fuqua School of Business is engaged in global management education and research. The school is committed to utilizing emerging technologies and methodologies to enable its unique approach to management education. These innovations include the deployment of next-generation classroom environments, live dialogue with relevant business/management thought leaders, and the development of new teaching modalities.
Duke/Fuqua and its Corporate Education arm (DukeCE) educate business leaders throughout the world. Through its partnership with Duke, ProtonMedia will develop new capabilities that will enhance the communication and collaboration between faculty, students and business leaders and will further the school’s reputation as a leader in the use of technology. The use of virtual worlds in educational settings is also an area of focus for this year's Duke Digital Initiative (www.duke.edu/ddi).
