Releases Statement on Urgent and Pressing Educational Needs for Practitioners
Adult ADHD is too often misunderstood and under-recognized by practitioners resulting in significantly poorer quality of life and treatment outcomes for patients; and is often masked by other comorbid conditions, making recognition and diagnosis even more difficult. “Unidentified ADHD is a missed opportunity to succeed in life, in marriage or in work. I see the clear need for early and accurate identification of ADHD in all clinical settings. This is an urgent, pressing and immediate need,” states Dr. David Scheiderer, a prominent psychiatrist in Virginia and a member of the newly formed Neuroscience Advisory Council (NAC).
The exact prevalence of ADHD in adults is not well documented, but with ADHD symptom prevalence rates of 60-70% into adult years, affected populations are estimated in the millions. Results from a national survey, however, showed only half of all individuals affected by ADHD are initiating contact with healthcare professionals. “Response rates to therapy are likely to decrease if significant comorbid conditions are not considered and confronted. To improve treatment outcomes, clinicians need to recognize ADHD as a lifespan disorder and proactively screen for comorbidities,” states Dr. David Scheiderer. The Neuroscience Advisory Council is a think tank developed by MJ Consulting Group (MJ), a strategic medical communications consulting company. NAC’s goal is to provide insight and practical know-how into the latest clinical advances in addition to identifying key educational gaps and needs for neuroscience and mental health professionals.
“The experience and proficiency of the NAC members enables us to provide a unique vision and strategic expertise in developing, delivering and managing evidence-based learning initiatives,” said MJ’s Chief Strategic Officer, Dr. Saundra Jain. “As a group, the Council brings a wealth of medical insight that is second to none and supports MJ’s mission to deliver clearly defined communications services and solutions aimed to improve the knowledge, skills and clinical competence of healthcare providers in the area of neuroscience and mental health.” Esteemed members of the NAC include: Vivien K Burt, MD, PhD, W.
