-The Green Institute for Village Empowerment (GIVE) has launched a monthly essay contest designed to heighten public awareness and reward students who demonstrate a keen understanding of the concepts of sustainability.
The Green Idea Challenge will award a $500 scholarship each month to the writer of the best essay submitted from among college students throughout the world. To enter, students can log on to GiveForTheFuture.org to watch experts speak on today’s environmental challenges and the sustainable solutions available to address them. Past speakers at the GIVE symposiums have included California State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, and S. David Freeman, president of Los Angeles Harbor Commission.
To be considered for the scholarship, students must submit a 500-word essay about the speaker’s presentation and provide specific ideas related to the proposed plan of action. The essays will be judged by team members of GIVE according to the following criteria: a demonstrated understanding of the issue, originality and presentation.
Symposiums can be viewed either in-person at the Krikorian Theatres at Dos Lagos, in Corona, Calif., or online at www.GiveForTheFuture.org. All entries must be submitted by the last day of the month that the topic symposium was delivered. Submit entries to essay@giveforthefuture.org. For more information, visit the GIVE web site. One scholarship will be awarded each month.
“We are looking for ways to educate and assist students and university organizations with their existing ‘greening’ efforts,” said Les Hamasaki, senior advisor to GIVE. “What better way than to align them with some of the most influential people working within sustainability and to incentivize them with a scholarship?”
To further its goal of promoting and supporting sustainability as a form of social entrepreneurship, GIVE on Campus has been formed and is in search of campuses looking to start their own chapter or student organizations. The mission of GIVE on Campus is to foster working relationships between students of varied disciplines, professors, businesses, and government at all levels to raise awareness and promote the advancement of sustainability.
